| AA305 - The Renaissance in Europe:
A Cultural Enquiry
ArtGuide
Is a useful guide to galleries and museums in Britain and Ireland, which
allows you to search on themes and places, so that you can check what's
going on in your local area.
Exhibitions
To find out about relevant exhibitions go to the ArtGuide
site (described above) and search on the term renaissance. This
will return information about current exhibitions (usually at the end
of the list).
The National Gallery
The National Gallery has an unrivalled collection of Renaissance art.
The website keeps you up to date with the latest exhibitions and acquisitions.
It also has a fascinating Online Catalogue, which allows you to search
the gallery by artist and theme, as well as giving an index of the whole
of the Gallery's collection. In addition to good quality online images,
the catalogue contains detailed notes on the works and artists.
The National Trust
The National Trust has many properties which are not relevant to the period,
so you will have to be careful in selecting places to visit. Some of the
properties which are specially relevant to the consideration of the Renaissance
in Britain are Blickling Hall in Norfolk, Canons Ashby House in Northamptonshire,
Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire and Montacute House in Somerset. You can find details of the opening times of
these properties by using the
Places to Visit section of the NT website. Their links & resources page connects to similar organisations' websites such as Cadw (Wales), English Heritage and Historic Scotland.
The Victoria and Albert Museum
The V&A has a great deal of material relevant to the Renaissance in
a range of different media it is not just a picture gallery. Use
this webiste to see what their holdings are and for information about
current exhibitions.
