Thought and Experience: Themes in the Philosophy of Mind (AA308)

Am I ready for this course?

Students who have studied AA308 regard it as a challenging but rewarding course. The course materials raise some complex and, at times, technical issues in philosophy. The course authors assume that you are already experienced in reading philosophical texts and discussing philosophical issues. You are strongly advised not to take it unless you have already completed A211 Philosophy and the Human Situation, A222 Exploring Philosophy or an equivalent course in philosophy from another university or college.

Below are two exercises designed to help you to decide whether you are ready to take this course.

Exercise 1

Read the statements below and decide whether you agree, disagree or are unsure.

• I am able to write an essay which develops a clear and well-supported argument
• I am able to follow an extended philosophical discussion in an article or book
• I have experience of analysing and evaluating philosophical arguments
• I am able to take an independent and critical attitude to what I read
• I am willing to persist with complex and challenging material
