Welcome to the Department of Classical Studies at the Open University. We study the texts, artefacts, images and ideas of ancient Greece, Rome and the Mediterranean. We study their transmission, reinterpretation and persistent presence across time, places and cultures. They are rich to think with, to create with and to argue about. They provide a critical distance from which to analyse not only the ancient world but also the intersecting traditions that link it with the contemporary world.
We currently offer six undergraduate courses in Classical Studies and a taught MA. There are also opportunities for postgraduate research. The subject expertise of the full-time teaching staff ranges across most aspects of Classical Studies: archaeology, art history, history, language, literature, philosophy and reception of Classical culture.
If you are interested in following an undergraduate course in Classical Studies, contact our Student Registration and Enquiry Service.
If you are interested in postgraduate study in the department, see the Research School's website for the Research Degree Prospectus and application forms.
