The impact of settlement archaeology on the understanding of the Etruscans

In 1848 Dennis wrote of Cities and Cemeteries. The first phases of Etruscan studies were, however dedicated to the study of the cemeteries. Now 150 years later, it is the study of settlements that is beginning to have a dramatic effect on our understanding of the development of the Etruscans and their neighbours. The paper will present an integrated synthesis of the work in regional survey and excavation in the primate (e.g. Tarquinia) and minor centres (e.g. Nepi). From this the political organisation of the Etruscans can be more effectively understood.
