The Conference
The conference will be held in the Clore Education Centre, The British Museum and is being organised by the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities and The British Museum Friends in collaboration with The Open University and The Institute of Classical Studies and is supported by the British Academy. The conference themes are:
· Discoveries and research over the last 5 years which have dramatically changed our outlook on the Etruscans
· Focus on current postgraduate work on the Etruscans
· An assessment of the state of Etruscan studies around the world, consisting of reports looking at related courses, teaching initiatives, activities and projects
· On the eve of The British Museum's 250th anniversary in 2003 to contrast the position of Etruscology then and now. Etruscan objects were among the earliest items in the Museum's collections, dating from 1756 onwards

Instead of the usual delivery of papers the conference will consist of discussion sessions considering the preprints which are available on the conference website. Each session will be introduced by a keynote lecture summarising advances in the relevant area.
An evening lecture and reception are being provided by the Institute of Classical Studies in the Beveridge Hall, Senate House, University of London, and the conference will also include the Eva Lorant Memorial lecture, this year to be given by Dr. Annette Rathje, University of Copenhagen, on the progress of Etruscology over the last 250 years. Miss Lorant bequeathed her estate to The Friends of The British Museum for the furtherance of Etruscan studies and the topic of this year's lecture links the conference with The British Museum's 250th anniversary in 2003.
The languages of the conference will be Italian and English.

We have now decided the details of the sessions and the final programme. This is now in the programme section and also shown in the in the list of papers and abstracts.
Papers now online
The website for the conference, now features the papers which have been submitted so far. These are linked to the provisional list of papers and abstracts. We hope you will find them a wide and varied selection. To read the papers you will be asked for a username and password, these are obtainable from the organisers upon completion of registration. If you are a contributor and have not yet sent your paper you are running out of time there is not much time left to get the papers on to the website and delegates will not have a long time to read your paper. We regret that we cannot now accept papers from new contributors, we have over fifty already.

Information for contributors
What you need to do now In line with our scheme to put all the papers on the conference website in advance, they are in the process of being installed so please check the website regularly and please report any errors to the organisers.
As you will know, the format is not for these papers to be delivered at the conference: they will be grouped into discussion sessions to be introduced with a short talk by a keynote speaker and then the discussion will be chaired by either the speaker or a separate chair.
In order to access the papers you need a password which will be sent to you when you have registered and paid the conference fee.
For the discussion sessions Once you have read the papers, if you wish to make a point at one of the discussion sessions which needs to be backed up by an illustration, please let us know by November 30th, with details of whether it is a 35mm. transparency, OHT or Powerpoint image. The papers themselves will also be available for projection during the conference.
Length of papers: Contributors are reminded that the maximum length of papers to be discussed at the conference is 10 pages including illustrations and notes. Please do not use less than a size 12 font.
Copyright: As you are aware the papers will be placed on the website from the end of September. A statement on the site will make it clear that the copyright of the papers remains with the author.
Languages: Please bear in mind that the languages of the conference are Italian and English. If you are unable to provide your paper in either of these languages please contact us and we shall try to help. Please remember that we needed your contributions in full by 31st July!
Posters
The British Museum Friends have donated a £250 prize for the best entry. We now have a good number of entries but last minute entries will still be accepted, so think about whether you have a project that could be presented in this way, using text and illustrations to convey the ‘story’. We will need to know the size of your poster. The posters will need to be set up on the morning of Monday 9th December.
Etruscan initiatives around the world
We have already arranged for a number of reports concerning excavations, projects, databases, courses, etc. from various countries to be available for the conference.
In addition, we are pleased to say that we have now negotiated for there to be an 'Archaeology in Etruria' report for next year’s issue of the Archaeological Reports 2002-3 which will include these submissions and all others which you care to inform us about. Archaeological Reports is published annually by the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies and the British School at Athens for their subscribers. It is a digest in English of recent work in Hellenic archaeology. This is your chance to make known your own and your country’s projects to thousands of readers! We hope to be as comprehensive as possible. You can let us know simply about your own work or undertake to report on all ‘Etruscan’ activities for your country. We are indebted to Lyn Rodley, editor of Archaeological Reports, for her co-operation on this and she has kindly provided guidelines and other information about Archaeological Reports. Written reports were required on November 1st, for circulation at the conference.
Student bursaries
These have now been awarded.

We regret that we are unable to arrange individual bookings and participants should organise this themselves. But we have negotiated discount rates with several hotels in the area of the Museum, details of which are given below. We cannot make recommendations about any of these hotels but the Museum’s Corporate Services section has found them satisfactory in the past. You may find it cheaper to arrange your own travel and accommodation package via your preferred travel agent.
