The Cyfarthfa Project

The Cyfarthfa Project was an investigation of the social and cultural context and a reconstruction of the repertoire of a mid-Victorian brass band. Examples of virtually all the sources for the band survive: the instruments, the repertoire, documents and images. The sources were subjected to forensic examination to gain an understanding of how and why the band came into existence, what its musical and social routines were, how it related to various forms of society, how its repertoire was accumulated and performed. The series of links to the left of this page leads you to an overview of the project, images of documents and other sources, and a BBC television documentary programme that was devoted to the project.
