The Trombone

The trombone project was aimed at accumulating enough information about the trombone to assemble a major book that would be a central point for future researchers into the instrument. It resulted in Trevor Herbert’s book The Trombone (Yale University Press, 2006)

The modern trombone is similar in most essential respects to the instrument that was invented in the mid-fifteenth century as a development of the single-slide trumpet. It has been one of the most ubiquitous of all musical instruments and has been used in most types of western music. The study was devoted to revealing the way the instrument has been understood at different points in history and in different parts of the world. There is a concentration on the way that trombonists have played, but as well the musical information contained in the study, the information is placed in socio-cultural contexts.
