In the 1860's, Haj Ahmed Ben Abdeslam, the head of
the Wazani confraternity and supreme spiritual authority in the
late 19th-century Morocco, divorced his Muslim wives and left the
scared city of Wazzan for Tangier, hoping to discover there a suitable
bride among the European female community. He was soon enamoured
of a British girl, Emily Keen, and, despite opposition from all
sides, he married her. The paper investigates the impact of this
intercultural marriage on the creation of an/Other Tangier, a space
of international intrigue and cultural transgression.
