Duro Oni, Ferguson Fellow

Profile:

Professor Duro Oni worked at the Centre for Nigerian Cultural Studies of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria for three years, after graduating, in 1973, from the University of Ibadan. From 1976 to the present he has been employed at the University of Lagos holding various positions including that of Director of the University’s Centre for Cultural Studies for five years from 1992 to 1997.

From September 1990 to January 1992, Duro Oni served as the Special Adviser to the Hon. Minister of Culture and Social Welfare and later that of Youth and Sports.

Key Publications:

An academic of repute, Prof. Duro Oni has a number of books and publications in reputable journals to his credit in the areas of cultural studies, dramatic literature and criticism, production design and aesthetics. These include: “Lighting Design and the Development of Modern Stage Lighting Practice in Nigeria”, “Theatre and Culture for Economic Emancipation in Nigeria”, Larger Than His Frame: Critical Studies and Reflections on Olu Obafemi, Arts and the Man: Interpretive Essays on Bode Osanyin, Nigeria and Globalisation: Discourses on Identity Politics and Social Conflict (co-edited) and “Lighting Up the Arena”. His most recent books are Stage Lighting Design: The Nigerian Perspective and Technical Theatre Practice in Nigeria.

Other interests:

A widely traveled man, Duro has trained in, attended conferences and or visited the following countries, among others; U.S.A., Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Finland, Bermuda, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, China, Japan, North Korea, Canada, Barbados, Trinidad and a host of African countries including Ghana, Liberia, Senegal, Morocco and South Africa.

A man of many parts, Prof. Duro Oni was the Director/Chief Executive of the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) from August 2000 to July 2006. He holds the BFA and MFA Degrees from the California Institute of the Arts and a Ph.D. from the University of Ibadan. He is currently Professor and Head of the Department of Creative Arts, University of Lagos. He is also a Fellow of the Society of Nigerian Theatre Artistes (SONTA) and Overseas Fellow of the Ferguson Centre, Open University in the United Kingdom..
