If you’re interested in finding out more about how we teach heritage studies why not explore some of the course materials below?
There are two extracts from Heritage, whose heritage? on the Open Learn website. This gives you access to Open University learning materials that are freely available for you to study in your own time, away from any formal teaching environment. The material from Heritage, whose heritage? comprises case studies on Aberdulais Falls: a case study in Welsh heritage (around 2 hours’ study time) and a couple of Heritage case studies from Scotland: ‘Battlefields as heritage sites’ and the ‘Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’ (around 5 hours’ study time).
There is also some related audio material available on iTunes U, or if you don't use iTunes, the same material can be found on the OU podcasts site. This includes audio tracks on Stonehenge and its significance, managing Stonehenge, perceptions of heritage and historical property management by the National Trust. You can watch a short video introduction to Understanding global heritage (AD281) on YouTube. This outlines the course themes and draws on material from the course DVD.
The AD281 Course DVD includes a number of video and audio documentaries along with academic perspectives on them which form part of your weekly study as part of the course. A number of these have been made freely available to view or download on iTunes U. These can be accessed by following the links below.
Students who study the course have access to a specially designed password protected iTunes U site which allows them to download materials from the Course DVD for use on mobile devices if they prefer this option to using the Course DVD.
The iTunes U sample materials have been arranged into a number of albums based on themes which run through the course.
If you do not have iTunes installed on your computer, you can access the albums on the OU Podcast page using your web browser. To access the albums, go to the OU Podcast site and search on the word ’heritage’ or the name of the specific album which interests you.
