Gentlemen,

I have had under my consideration your Statement respecting the Establishment, which in your opinion, will be necefsary for the Metropolitan Police Office, and also as to the Police Force, which you consider requisite for carrying into effect the Metropolitan Police Act, within that portion of the Metropolitan Police District, which is first

to be subjected to operation of that Act.

And I have now the satisfaction to signify to you my approval of your arrangements, and to sanction your commencing the New System of Police, with such an Establishment and Force as you have proposed vizt.

Office Establishment

Commifsioner’s Clerks.

Receiever’s Office.

8 Superintendents
20 Inspectors
88 Sergeants
895 Constables

I have also taken into consideration the amount of the Salaries to be paid to the Clerks of the Office, and the Salaries and Rates of pay of the Police Force, and I have determined to establish the following Scales.

Office Establishment

Commifsioner’s Clerks.

Chief Clerk – A yearly salary of £200, with an increase of £10 for [end of page 4]

for each year’s Service in that Rank, until the Salary amounts to £400.

Second Clerk – A yearly Salary of £150 with an increase of £8 for every year’s Service in that Rank, until the salary amounts to £270.

Third Clerk – A yearly Salary of £90 with a similar annual increase of £5, until the salary amounts to £150.

For the purpose of avoiding fractions in teh Salaries of the Clerks, the year of Service is to be calculated at every station from the Quarter day next after the date of the Letter

from this Office, signifying the Clerk's Appointment, or less when the appointment bears date on a Quarter day.

Receiver’s Office

Chief Clerk – A yearly Salary of £200.

Second Clerk – A yearly Salary of £150.

Police Force

Superintendents – A yearly Salary of £200 each.

Inspectors – A yearly Salary of £100 each.

Sergeants – A daily pay of three

shillings [end of page 6]

shillings and sixpence each.

Police Constables – A daily pay of three shillings each.

The pay of the Sergeants and Constables will be subject to certain deductions, which may be hereafter directed.
