Notes:

  1. Edward Lyscom joined the Metropolitan Police in 1934, graduating from Peel House in the following year. He was posted to the Highbury Vale Station at ‘N’ (Stoke Newington) Division.
  2. Fun was a satirical weekly that ran from 1861 to 1901. While it was viewed as the ‘poor man’s Punch’ (which had a readership of 40,000, Fun reached an audience of 20,000), it displayed a more radical vitality than its more famous rival. In this cartoon the lady is asking after an address, however, the police officer takes ‘14A’ to refer to the number of a colleague!   5. The white gloves indicate that he is on 'points duty', i.e. he remained in a stationary position directing traffic.
