Research: History of early modern medicine

The Wellcome Award which Dr De Renzi received in 2003 has strengthened and broadened research in the history of medicine at the OU. Dr De Renzi has published on the history of legal medicine and is now working on a book on medicine in Counter Reformation Rome, including physicians' social status and relations with patients, sites of medical education and the practice of post-mortem. Dr Elmer is continuing his research on medicine and politics in 17th century England, including on Irish healer Valentine Greatorex; he is also preparing a database of English and Irish medical practitioners. After co-editing a book on Medicine and Religion in Enlightenment Europe, Dr Grell has organised a conference on medical travel and education (1500-1800), with a volume of essays in view. He is now focusing on the relations between natural philosophy and medical practice, including on Danish physician and natural historian Ole Worm.
