Faculty of Arts teaching
and research showcase
Art History
Come and meet members of the Art History Department to talk about any
aspect of art that interests you. Our stand will showcase the wide range
of research carried out in the department and provide a taster of our
courses in both modern and Renaissance art. There will be a special focus
on the ‘expanded field’ of art, with the opportunity to watch
and discuss videos on Aboriginal Art and Globalisation, and to view part
of the university's collection of Aboriginal art.
Classical Studies
Find out more about the classical world and the impact classical languages
still have today. Highlights include the chance to take a Latin lesson
and a story-telling session delivered by a Homeric bard!
History
At the History display, you will find illustrations of two major research
interests in the Department: Crime and Policing and Film History. The
display will give you background information on the work of our two public
speakers at Open Day, Professor Clive Emsley and Dr James Chapman.
History of Science, Technology and Medicine
Our display will focus on our teaching, particularly the history of medicine
course, Medicine and Society in Europe, 1500–1930 (A218).
For a taster, see ‘Kill
or Cure’. Follow these links for information on other
HSTM courses and Postgraduate
Study.
Literature
This Open Day provides an opportunity to see who we are and what we do,
to meet and talk informally to both members of the department and PhD
students about what we offer and what it’s like to study with us,
and to find out about our newest courses. Follow
this link to find out more.
Music
At the Music stand you can explore a range of our course materials. Dr
Robert Philip will give a talk at 2 pm on composers’ recordings
of their own music.
Philosophy
Come and meet members of the Philosophy Department, at our stand, where
you will find a display introducing you to some classic philosophical
questions. You can also investigate a display of books and posters, showing
how members of the department address some of these questions in their
teaching and research.
Religious Studies
The theme of the Religious Studies stand is ‘the local and the global’.
We think that regardless of whether we think of ourselves as ‘religious’
or ‘spiritual’, religion plays an important part in the cultural
identity of people throughout the world both in history and in our own
time. Come along to our display to find out more about religious practice
and influences in Milton Keynes and test your knowledge by answering the
questions in our global quiz.
The Ferguson Centre for African and Asian Studies
The Centre promotes interdisciplinary research into the cultures of Africa
and Asia. Centre staff are drawn from the eight disciplines represented
in the Arts Faculty and have extensive national and international interests
and contacts. Our stand will feature an exhibition of Gujarati textiles.
