The Mind Meaning and Rationality Research Group is currently running a seminar series on practical rationality. These seminars will take place at Walton Hall. All welcome. Contact: Carolyn Price at (c.s.price@open.ac.uk)
The next seminar in the series will be held on Wednesday 19th May 2010
Professor Roger Crisp (Philosophy, University of Oxford) will present a paper titled ‘A Third Method of Ethics?’.
Summary
Over the last few decades, it has come to be widely accepted in moral philosophy that ‘virtue ethics’ provides an alternative to so-called ‘consequentialism’ (which says that it’s only the consequences of actions that matter) and ‘deontology’ (which stresses ideas of duty). This paper will seek to explain what virtue ethics is, and assess whether it is helpful to understand it as a ‘third method of ethics’.
Venue: Walton Hall, Wilson A, Meeting Room 5.
Time: 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm
