I have sent to the Allusion database an entry re a passage in Letter 547, To his Mother, Letters 2, p.264 [Late August 1878], [Montargis], asking her to send him at once a copy of “Howie’s Worthies ‘of which there are many editions. Send me one with most notes”. Note 4 on p.264 explains: “John Howie, The Scots Worthies (1775, second edition 1781), a collection of biographies mainly of Covenanters.”
