Dr Stefanie Sinclair

Lecturer in Religious Studies

I joined the Arts Faculty as a Lecturer in Religious Studies in 2009, but have been working for the Open University since 1999 as an Associate Lecturer in the North West region (teaching AA100 ‘The Arts Past and Present’, DD100 ‘An Introduction to the Social Sciences’, AD317 ‘Religion Today’ and the MA in Religious Studies). I have been involved in the maintenance and development of a range of the OU’s modules in Religious Studies, including A217 ‘Introducing Religions’, A332 ‘Why is religion controversial?’, and A880 and A881, Parts 1 and 2 of the MA in Religious Studies. I am currently chairing the production of Y031, the new Arts and Languages Access Module. Together with my colleague Graham Harvey, I have worked as an academic consultant on the BBC/ OU co-produced TV series ‘Divine Women’, first broadcast on BBC 2 in April 2012. I am also book reviews editor of the journal Culture and Religion.

I studied Protestant Theology and English Language and Literature at Heidelberg University in Germany and got ‘hooked’ on Religious Studies when I spent a semester as a visiting student at Stirling University. I completed my post-graduate studies, including an MA in 'Religion, Culture and Society' and a PhD in Religious Studies, at Lancaster University. My PhD thesis was on ‘National identity and the politics of religion and education in Germany’, and I continue to have a special research interest in the relationship between religion and identity (gender and national identities in particular).

Current research interests include

  • Religion & identity (part. national, ethnic and gender identities)
  • Religion as cultural heritage
  • Religion and social policy
  • Representations of national & religious identities in party political discourse and in the media (part. in Germany & Britain)
  • The construction of the ‘Islamic threat’ in party political discourse and in the media
  • Representations of the hijab  (in a range of historical, social and cultural contexts)
  • Contemporary Jewish identity in Germany from a historical perspective
  • ‘Blended tuition’ and digital literacy in higher education
