New Zealand dotterel, one of the rarest shore birds in the world. The birds are very 'trusting' I was just walking along and saw this one. However this is a major problem for them as they are easy prey for their many introduced predators such as stoats and feral cats.
Australian gannet in flight. Gannets nest in areas where there are constant strong winds so it is often possible to take pictures such as this where they are just hanging in the air waiting to land in their packed colony.

Ecologists surveying an area of little explored forest near Okarito lagoon, we were not totally lost, honest.

Urtica ferox Nettle tree. Fairly common in scrubby undergrowth. Each of the needle like hairs can deliver an extremely painful sting, there are reports of people dieing after wandering into clumps of these bushes. The particular plant shown here was growing mixed in with large expanses of gorse (Ulex europaeus) that had taken over a nature reserve. Going along the path was rather hazardous trying to avoid the spikes of the gorse then to be suddenly confonted with this even more unpleasant plant.
