Students who have registered for the May 2003 presentation of M874 please note: the materials displayed here relate to the old version of M874. The revised course materials for the November 2002 presentation are now available and the preparatory materials will be updated by January 2003 so that they are inline with the new materials and JBuilder software. You need to obtain the new materials before you can do the preparatory work.
This document describes a scheme of work which will enable students of M874 who do not have an object-oriented background to be able to study that course on an equal footing with students who satisfy the pre-requisites. The study guide describes an period of work (which might take as much as eight weeks) in which you will be asked to read some of the early course texts and carry out a number of exercises. Each week will usually take you between four and six hours. You do not have to stick to this timing: you may, for example, decide to cover two weeks in the space of one week. At the end of this study you will be asked to start the course again at its initial point and follow the normal timetable.
If you have any queries about these preparatory items, you will be able to contact one of our associate lecturers. Contact details will be posted here in February/March 2003.
The links below are to each of the eight weeks of the early start period. Appendix A contains some additional programming exercises and Appendix B contains the solutions to the exercises in Appendix A.
We would suggest that you print out the text associated with each of the weeks and the appendices and then cut and paste any code you require from Appendix A.
