The Field Studies Council's centre at Preston Montford is a delightful Queen Anne country house by the banks of the River Severn to the west of Shrewsbury. It is set in its own grounds, which comprise 12 hectares of grassland and woodland.

The surrounding countryside lies in the floodplain of the River Severn and is predominantly agricultural. Close by lie the Welsh and Shropshire Hills with some of the most varied geology in Britain. Habitats include woodlands, heather moorlands and grasslands, upland and lowland peatlands, streams and rivers. Glacial, periglacial and fluvial landforms also feature strongly in the area.
