The Open University is the UK’s largest university, a world leader in flexible part-time education combining a mission to widen access to higher education with research excellence, transforming lives through education.

The role

We are seeking a Lecturer in Mechanical and Materials Engineering to contribute to the development of a new Mechanical Engineering strand of teaching within our distance-learning BEng/MEng qualifications. You will work as part of an energetic and committed engineering team delivering distance-learning general engineering qualifications to diverse, motivated students.

You should be research active in the field of Materials Engineering, ideally with expertise in either residual stress engineering (multi-scale measurement/modelling/manufacture/structural integrity) or the high temperature performance of energy materials (full-field testing/modelling/creep-mechanisms/life assessment). In REF2014, Panel B13 judged 91% of materials engineering research at the OU to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ based on outputs. You will be supported to secure external research and scholarship funding, publish in high-ranking peer reviewed journals and contribute to future REF submissions.

As an academic member of staff in the School of Engineering & Innovation you will be based at Walton Hall, Milton Keynes.

You will have a good honours degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering or a closely related area.

The principles of equality and diversity will be evident in all aspects of your work. Experience of online and/or distance education would be an advantage.

The School is proud to have gained an Athena SWAN Departmental Bronze Award in 2016.
