IDO in Africa

The Open University has been working with partners across Sub-Saharan African since 1992. We work with developing countries to:

  • help build human capital and capacity (strengthening existing infrastructure and building for the future)
  • directly impact the socio-economic development of the region
  • assist Sub-Saharan countries to meet their Millennium Development Goals.

Our programme portfolio includes two flagship programmes. TESSA, which has reached over 430,000 primary and secondary school teachers since its launch in 2005. HEAT, launched in 2010 to help sub-Saharan Africa stride towards its goal of 1 million more frontline healthcare workers by 2015.

Our education portfolio includes an MBA programme in Ethiopia, a Masters of Public Administration in Ghana, work with Ghanaian business schools , and a project with the Kenyan African Centre for Technology Studies to support innovation within the agriculture, health and sustainable energy sectors.

Our research portfolio includes investigating how pressure on water resources is impacting South Africa’s Western Cape 'fine bush' habitat; International Aids and Malaria Vaccine Initiatives (part of the Innogen programme); identifying policy paths for agricultural produce, oil and gas, and minerals across sub-Saharan Africa.
