Education in Africa

Over 40 years The Open University (OU) has developed a unique model of supported open and distance learning. This model now has the potential to bring education to millions in Africa.

Using new technology and open distance learning, our education projects are innovative, adaptable, affordable and able to reach millions of students, teachers, health workers and managers.

The OU teaches by 'blended learning' – a mix of user-appropriate media and methods such as electronic/online learning and printed texts. Underpinning it all is support from a personal tutor. The OU model is:

  • high quality - we are renowned for the quality of our materials and methods
  • flexible - can be adapted to local needs, and easily integrated into existing modes of study
  • accessible - students can study in their own homes and key workers can upgrade their skills while remaining in work
  • cost-effective - once developed, materials can be used on a large scale
