Managing the public and voluntary sector: the MPA

Status: Current

The Open University Business School is delivering management and leadership development in government agencies in Ethiopia and Ghana.

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) is a postgraduate qualification for managers aspiring to senior positions in: international agencies; federal, national, regional and local government; the uniformed services; quasi-governmental organizations; NGOs; voluntary organisations; and social enterprises.

This approach creates lasting professional networks both internally and externally

Groups of public servants in Africa are studying together for the MPA as part of a diverse international student cohort. One group is made up of employees of the African Union, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  A second group is made up of civil servants in Ghana.

Studying the MPA while in employment does not just provide individual learning and development. It builds capacity in the organisations involved. This approach creates lasting professional networks both internally and externally, and the new ideas and practices introduced have support across the organization.

The MPA initiative is funded by the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission.
