Role
The key role of the CIO is to deliver the current and future core IT systems to underpin the University’s ambitions and to provide effective services for its customers and staff.
The role encompasses day-to-day operational service delivery and systems development & maintenance. However the crucial aspect is working with colleagues across the University to understand their objectives and to create an IT strategy and capability to enable them to be successful.
Career
David Joined The Open University in August 2010. He has already overseen a large scale change in the department with the centralisation of IT support, a switch from traditional telephony to the use of Lync (voip) and the establishment of the Systems Futures programme which will replace and update the University’s core business systems.
In the last year, The OU’s, IT’s and David’s work has been recognised by leading bodies; seeing him included in the Computer Weekly Tech50 and the CIO Magazine top 100 CIO list.
Before joining the University, David was the Chief Technology Officer for Direct.gov.uk and a member of the government's CTO council. He has previously held IT Director and Managing Director positions in the insurance and financial services sector covering many well-known high street brands. He has led and been involved in the creation of award-winning systems during this time, including the UK’s first real-time internet banking service.
