Role Belinda Tynan

The Pro Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching supports the high quality learning and teaching experience that enables students of the University  to succeed and reach their goals.  The role draws upon the sub-units of Learning and Teaching, the Open Media Unit, Learning and Teaching Solutions and the University Library to create an exciting and innovative learning environment for the University.  The PVC (LT) is chair of several of the University main governance committees and is a driver of policy relating to learning and teaching. The role interacts across the University faculties, institutes and supporting portfolios to develop and implement learning and teaching strategy.

The role carries specific responsibilities  for: 

  • Learning and Teaching strategy and governance
  • The Learning and Teaching Unit – Provides strategic direction for learning and teaching, developing policies, frameworks, roadmaps and guidance to deliver a consistent and high quality student experience while promoting innovation in learning and teaching. 
  • Learning and Teaching Solutions (LTS) – LTS is responsible for the design, development, production and delivery of learning material working with academic colleagues to produce quality learning products.  It provides learning materials online via the virtual learning environment.  It runs the computing helpdesk, which support students and associate lecturers with their OU software and supports strategic, business or centrally funded projects designed to improve systems and processes.
  • Library Services – Library Services supports students to study successfully and develop information and digital literacy skills.  The online library enables students worldwide to access trusted, quality educations resources to support and enhance their studies.
  • Open Media Unit (OMU) – OMU commissions and manages the production of OpenLearn, YouTube, iTunes and BBC output to support both the social and business mission of The Open University.

Career

Professor Belinda Tynan joined the Open University in April 2013. Previously, she was Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning, Teaching and Quality at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. She has a doctorate in education from the University of Western Australia and is an active researcher and frequently invited speaker.  She has more than twenty years of experience as a teacher, lecturer and senior administrator in the education sector in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the UK.
