The Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching is responsible for delivering the best possible learning and teaching environment for students working closely with Faculties and Student Services. The role carries responsibilities for learning, materials, systems and resources through the portfolio units, the Learning and Teaching Office (LTO), Learning and Teaching Solutions (LTS), the Library and the Open Media Unit (OMU).

The PVC is also responsible for the development and implementation of policy with respect to the use of ICT and new media in teaching  and teaching support; the use of the Library as a service to OU students and the wider community; tuition; and assessment and examination.

There are also important responsibilities for curriculum policy, and qualification policies and structures. The PVC is additionally responsible for monitoring quality assurance and enhancement processes across the Faculties, according to policy set by PVC RSQ and supported by IET and the Quality Office. Another important part of the role is promoting innovation in formal and informal learning through the portfolio units with support from KMi and IET. The OMU has an important role in maintaining and expanding the university’s Open Educational Resources for informal learning on, for example, iTunes, YouTube  and the OU’s own OpenLearn site.
