Outer space expertise transferred to the ocean depths

The Open University’s Planetary and Space Sciences Research Institute (PSSRI) is building a prototype air-monitoring system for nuclear submarines. It uses gas analysis technology developed by PSSRI for space missions such as the Cassini/Huygens probe to Saturn’s moon Titan.

Known as the Distributed Atmospheric Monitoring System (DAMS), the new system will continuously monitor a submarine’s atmospheric environment and alert the crew to any imbalance in the gases present.
