 eSTEeM is currently managed by:

eSTEeM Director - Diane Butler

Having joined The Open University in 1995 from a background in secondary schools and FE, I am currently the Director of eSTEeM and Associate Dean (Academic Excellence) for the STEM Faculty. I am an OU alumnus with an MA in Open and Distance Learning and have served as a Teaching Fellow in the Centre for Open Learning in Mathematics, Science, Computing and Technology (COLMSCT) Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. My specific interests include student collaborative work, the challenges facing online learners and the efficacy of online synchronous tuition.

eSTEeM Deputy Director - Trevor Collins

I am a Senior Research Fellow in the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) my research is in the area of technology-enhanced learning. I joined the OU's Psychology Department in 1994 to do a PhD in the Human Cognition Research Lab. During my PhD, my colleagues in HCRL helped to set up KMi and I became one of the first PhD graduates in KMi. Since then I've continued to work at the OU, in the Institute of Educational Technology (IET) and KMi. Some of my research has involved designing and evaluating the use of educational technology to support distance learning at the OU, and through that I got involved in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. I am the Deputy Director of eSTEeM and I am particularly interested in the relationship between education theory and practice and how practice informs research.

eSTEeM Manager - Diane Ford

I studied for my undergraduate degree at the University of Derby and hold a BA (Hons) in Law with European Studies. I joined the Open University in December 2005 when I worked as Centre Secretary for the two STEM focused Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETLs). This was an externally funded initiative by HEFCE which ran for 5 years. I have worked for eSTEeM since its creation in 2010 and currently occupy the role as Centre Manager. I am required to oversee the operational, financial and administrative elements of eSTEeM.

Hook NickeSTEeM Centre Support Assistant - Nick Hook

I joined the Open University in 2012, when I worked as an Associate Lecturer Services Assistant at the Oxford regional centre. With the closure of the Oxford office I relocated to Walton Hall in 2015, to take up a new position as a Disability Support Assistant. Around this time I began studying at the Open University, and in 2019 I graduated with an MA in History with distinction. I have recently joined eSTEeM as a Support Assistant, where I primarily provide administrative support to Diane and the wider team.
