This project aims to assess changes in student perception about online/distance practical science particularly when conducted in a collaborative manner. The main resource that will be analysed will be drawn from the archive of projects submitted by students in S382 Astrophysics, SXP288 Practical science: physics & astronomy and SXHL288 Practical science.  We also plan to consult colleagues within the Computing and Communications Department who have researched the area of online collaboration and online communities through their eSTEeM projects.

There is anecdotal evidence that students have a negative perception of the value of online collaboration in general though students probably lose some of these inhibitions as they progress through the levels.

This work will undertake a thematic analysis of the reflective elements of end of module assessments in the three chosen courses.  The specific research questions that are to be addressed are as follows:-

  • how the process of collaboration works across the different stages of this inquiry
  • students’ perceptions of the group-work
  • the activities that they undertake to make it ‘work’
  • obstacles they experience, and whether/how the technologies support them.
