Students who have registered early for the 18J presentation of S294 (Cell Biology) have been allowed the opportunity to access the module website in advance of the official module start with forum support and some tutorials. The focus has been on helping students to consolidate their prior study and gain confidence before embarking on the main programme of study. This pilot has been informed by the observations of the M140 module team who offered an early start opportunity to early registrants for the 17J presentation of M140 and has been funded by MSQ. The pilot and will require rigorous evaluation to determine if it both justifies its funding in terms of student retention and improves the student experience/ enhances student learning.

Our aim is to improve the experience of students who participate in early start, to potentially improve retention among this cohort and thereby improve the overall completion/ pass rate for the module.

This project will help determine if early start on certain target modules can

  • mitigate against some of the effects of concurrent study
  • offer an enhanced student experience on a module considered overly demanding
  • improve module and level outcomes for academically less well prepared students (particularly those on the Health Sciences qualification).
