Despite some progress in recent years, the number of suitably trained health professionals in Uganda is at crisis level. The rate at which the problem is being solved is far from satisfactory, and the issue is further complicated by major challenges in securing adequate levels of resources, let alone their efficient and accountable management.

It is at the frontline of health care, deep in the villages, that this serious deficiency is most damaging. This is where the majority of Ugandans are based, in rural communities struggling to make the best of an inadequate health service.

HEAT is working with Busoga Yaiffe, an organisation committed to the socio-economic well-being of the region, to help improve the health and quality of life in such communities. Although we're starting with the Busoga region, we share ambitious long-terms plans. Specifically, we aim to help increase the capacity of the Village Health Teams to provide inclusive, quality health services in their areas, serving at least 2 million residents.

Working with Health Science institutes and colleges, as well as District Health Offices, we will help train health facilitators and tutors to support the ongoing education and training of health workers. Together with our regional partners, HEAT and Busoga Yaiffe aim to help increase detection and treatment of major diseases such as malaria, TB and HIV/AIDS; and improve Maternal, Newborn and Child Health service delivery including an increase in the proportion of fully immunized children, and increased access to treated bed nets for pregnant women and the under-fives.
