After two years of careful planning and collaboration with the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health, African health experts and UNICEF and AMREF, we were extremely proud to announce the launch of HEAT in Ethiopia in early 2011.
The ambition of the Ethiopian programme is to upgrade the skills of the country’s 33,000 Health Extension Workers, beginning with a pilot group of 1,000.
These health workers provide community health services to a rural population of around 65 million, and the increased training will have a dramatic impact on Ethiopia’s target of reducing child and maternal mortality and improving health (Millennium Development Goals 4 & 5).
