This document is intended to assist an ITSP / user to install Sophos Anti-Virus on a Windows XP \ Vista PC over VPN.
The following assumes there is NO anti virus software already installed, including old versions of Sophos. If there is, you will need to remove all references and re-boot the PC.
This software is now available for all University staff who have a PC with a ARCHAE Number (University Asset Register Number), staff can also install Sophos on their home PCs.
The licence provides regular updates that will be offered automatically.
The PC must be logged onto the OPEN-UNIVERSITY domain.
All applications must be closed, indicated by an empty taskbar, as shown in Fig 1.

Click on the Start button and from the cascade menu select Run…
In the dialogue Window that opens type the command shown in Fig 2 click [OK]

Next a DOS and SOPHOS setup window will be seen. Fig.3

In the Sophos window the Source and Destination files will be displayed along with a Blue progress bar.
When the SOPHOS installation has completed, close any open windows and restart the machine.
After you have logged on to the OPEN-UNIVERSITY domain, look for the Blue shield icon located on the right hand side of the task bar. Fig.4

Right mouse click over the Blue shield icon and select 'Open Sophos Anti-Virus'. Fig.5

The Sophos Anti-Virus application will now open. In the top left hand corner of the screen, in the 'status' box it should read;
On-access scanning: Active
as shown in Fig.6

Open the Sophos Anti-Virus application (Fig.7).
From here you can start scanning using the default settings or configure your own preferences.

Start a Sweep by clicking on the 'Scan My Computer' link.
The scan will start and the progress will be shown as in Fig.8

Once the Sweep has completed it will report if any viruses have been found and what action, if any was taken. If viruses have been detected please contact:-
