Tao Papaioannou

Tao Papaioannou is Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Communications at the University of Nicosia.  She has a B.A. degree in Communication with a double specialization in Public Relations/Journalism, an M.A. in Communication and a Ph.D. in Communication/Information Management. 

Prior to moving to Cyprus, Tao Papaioannou worked at the National Geographic Society of America and taught communication in the Department of Communication at the University of Arizona, USA.  Her current research interests include digital media and civic and political participation, social media and youth practices, media literacy and education, digital media and learning and research methodologies for studying networked communication. She is author/coauthor of many journal articles and book chapters on these subjects and one of the guest editors of a special issue of the academic journal “Media Studies” on critical insights in European media literacy research and policy.  Also, individually and in collaboration with other researchers, she has received a number of large grants from the EU/Cyprus Institute for the Promotion of Research. Finally, Tao Papaioannou has served on advisory boards and management committees of European Union funded research actions and projects including, most recently, the Expert Advisory Board of the Horizon Project Europe (2013-present), “Transforming Audiences, Transforming Societies”, a 4 year (2010-2014) European Concerted Research Action (COST Action IS 0906) and the EU Kids Online Project III.
