Classical/post-Classical intertexts Based on Racine’s Phèdre  (1677) but transposed to British India under the Raj. Racine’s play draws on both Euripides’ and Seneca’s treatments of the myth.

Comment First performed by the National Theatre Company at the Old Vic on 9 September 1975. Collected in Dramatic Verse 1973-1985 (1985) and in Tony Harrison Plays 2, 2002.
