Carmel Kent – AI for learning: can we sort the good from the bad?

Abstract:

Artificial intelligence (AI) applications used for education have a very conflicted history: we often hear about algorithms discriminating against vulnerable students, unaccountable decision making, systems that take away teachers’ agency, and students’ privacy being violated. On the other hand, we also hear about AI relieving the burden from teachers, AI enabling a more inclusive assessment and enabling more personalised experiences.

So – how can any stakeholder (e.g., a student, a teacher, or a system designer) critically evaluate and design AI-based educational technologies?  In this talk, I will share some ideas my colleagues and I had about this question, hoping to get others’ thoughts on the topic as well.
