So we have a business network – what is a business network?

Firstly of course it is a mechanism to allow businesses to talk to each other. Nothing very new in that. There are plenty of forums both virtual and face-to-face where business folks can get together to discuss topics of common interest. And we hope that will happen with the Open University Business Network. But this Network offers more.

At each of our quarterly events, we give the opportunity for business managers to come along and hear some of the latest management thinking from our experts. Back in October we heard from Siv Vangen on the benefits and possible pitfalls of inter-organisational collaboration. Those who came along commented on how useful it was to hear these key points summarised so clearly. If you missed that event you can catch up with the key points on line now at http://www8.open.ac.uk/business-school/corporate/business-network/collaboration.

Once again there is the chance to gain some insights from one of the OU’s experts on the latest thinking on a particular management topic. These are not random thoughts or abstract theories, but solid findings from research that has been carried out in the business world.

Why do collaborative ventures often fall short of expectations?

And how do you avoid the pitfalls that lead to such failure?

At this, our first Business Network Breakfast Briefings event, Dr Siv Vangen, an expert on inter-organisational collaboration, will explore why collaborative ventures often fall short of expectations, and how to avoid the pitfalls that lead to such failure.

Date:Thursday, 13 October, 2011

Time: 08:00 – 10:00

Location: Juniper and Medlar Rooms, The Hub, The Open University

Contact: Debbie Hing 01908 655272

Dr. Vangen’s research has focused programmatically on collaboration since 1992.

There are three inter-connected strands which concern the development of collaboration:

  • Practice oriented theory about the management of collaboration (partnerships and alliances)
  • Conceptualizations about bridging theory and practice (which is about the accessibility and usability of theory for practitioners)
  • Knowledge about methodology for practice oriented research and theory development

The key aims for the Breakfast Briefings are to find ways of working together with the business community, sharing with them our research and knowledge to make a difference when they face real business challenges.
