Talking about the PlaSciGardens project – one small bit relating to the Kew Gardens study. Relating to how children collect data out of doors. 9 – 10 year olds organised in small grous.
The goal was to aid engagement and help children use meaningful investigatives skills. So they were asked to classify fruit and veg based on a tour of the ones growing in the garden.
Had: camera, audio, texting and a call-up from an information store.
So the data collected was quite varied
The audio was interesting and good and showed the level of reflection and conceptual thinking of the different children.
Problems – helpers wanted to tell the kids what to do. Helpers thought the mobiles were a distraction, but they were trying to impart information in a boring way.
Good bits – kids all remembered the mobiles and that helped them recall what they were doing at the time.
MPT functions related to pedagogical outcomes that can be achieved without the teacher.
Call-up information lets kids discover knowledge about a plant when standing next to it. Contextual delivery. Additional advantage that you (researcher) knows where student is standing at the time. Info written by subject matter expert rather than teachers.
However, teachers were essentially technophobes and did not access the web site. Teachers underestimated children’s abilities with technology.
Ownership of pictures by kids raises their self-esteem.
