A fairground of ideas in Milton Keynes

Sometimes, you just have to do it – get everyone in one place and bounce ideas, share inspirations and motivations. So what was the Milton Keynes Design Fair like?

Three tutors, three central academics, seven students across the Design Innovation Qualification and two visitors made their way to the Open University Campus on a rainy weekend in March 2018. First of all, we were drawn into an ocean of plastic waste with an installation by AnnMarie McKenna. AnnMarie then challenged us to address the problem of plastic waste we are currently producing in our first workshop of the day.

Two teams discussed and quickly prototyped ways to address plastic waste. Both teams went for empowering and nudging the consumer to buy more consciously. One team educated the shopper about plastics used in packaging and introduced a recycling traffic light systems. The other team explored alternatives to plastic packaging, re-introducing different kinds of reusable bags, like string bags or paper bags for the consumer to pick the right amount of unpackaged produce.

In the second workshop, Clive Hilton told us the story about stories in design. A good narrative around a design hooks the user emotionally and then supports this emotion with facts to create a memorable argument and deep effect. Clive challenged us to create such a narrative and provided some props to create stories around. One group worked with a framed photo of a child addressing the theme of childhood obesity, and the other group created a story around a glass jar telling a story about lifelong education.

At the end of the day we discussed what the participants thought about such a qualification-level event, and there was a clear unison that such events are a fantastic opportunity to engage with the subject of design without the pressure of assessment. These are social events to discuss what matters to us, make contacts and learn something beyond the module we are studying. We all hoped that we can run more of these events in the future.

Thank you for putting on this event. It was great to meet fellow students, tutors and academics and feel that we were all on the same level and participating in activities together. It helped to boost my confidence and realise that everyone, no matter what experience they have can participate in design and make valuable contributions.

I’m looking forward to more events like this in the future and hope more people join in the fun!

Great event and I concur with Amanda’s point that it was good to all be on the same level pulling our collective knowledge to think about design and the impact we can make on problems as complex as plastic waste.
I would personally like to thank everyone for participating in the workshop, it was great to see the scope of the problems discussed and identifying where design innovation would be purposeful in finding a solution (or many solutions) to a problem frankly of our own making, we did design ourselves into plastic waste issues, lets design ourselves out of it!
I’ve attached some links to interesting sites for those who want to follow up on how you can get involved in tackling plastic waste, or other related problems, and also that short animation I presented, which is quite evocative in terms of showing the extent of the problem, almost reflective of Clive’s great presentation about design narratives.

Definitely worth checking out this next link if anyone has access to a drone! A good example of system innovation, and something you can get involved in!

I think to be fair to the manufacturers, its worth having a look at what they are actively doing to reduce waste: http://www.bpf.co.uk/article/marine-litter-event-brings-together-retailers-entrepreneurs-and-1284.aspx
Some food for thought there, enjoy the links, look out for future design competitions, and if anyone is popping along to the Design workshop at the Imperial War Museum, I am sure you will have as much fun as we had in Milton Keynes.
Here’s to more events where we can all meet up and collaborate!
