In praise of the curation of joy

I’ve been thinking a lot about how infectious the spirit of joyousness can be. In particular the joy that comes from collecting things – anything – thoughts, ideas, images, words, whatever.  Yes, at one level it’s intensely personal – the seeing is everything. But at another the seeing of the seeing in itself can be wonderful. The curation of joy. The moth lady at the crack of dawn hiding in a Devon hedgerow counting the night catch before the spring sun blasts them to smithereens as part of her 20 year transect.  The trainspotter at the end of platform 5 at Leeds who may be the original human instantiation of a modern rail “app”. The secret bird watcher on the Lizard Peninsula who has just published his 30 year bird log to the gasped astonishment of the noisier, local twitchers. What incredible infectious joy!

A friend of mine – John Heward – left Cambridge some years ago to live in Copenhagen and follow his passion for Scandinavian design and design history. I miss him. But I’ve recently been appreciating and enjoying his two beautiful blogs:
