PR Week has quoted me for the third consecutive week, this time on the UK government’s handling of communications. UK is showing strong collaborative leadership, but needs to keep to one simple strategic aim, and not mix messages. This is not a crisis or a conflict of our choosing, so best to respond in a way which is timely, proportionate and carries broad-based support. President Obama is getting the tone right when focused on protecting civilians. Some of the neo-cons risk overcomplicating the messaging: a change of regime is more likely if we focus on what we can legitimately and practically do, and keep sceptics on side. UK diplomats and armed forces are working damn hard to keep up the momentum, and contribute to a much bigger effort. Multilateral and bilateral channels must both be pursued.
