Multimodal Ethnography

The study used an innovative methodology that combined ethnographic methods of data collection with multimodal analysis to investigate the diverse literacies that young children experience at home and in preschool. Combining ethnography with a multimodal interest in how meanings are made in diverse modes, not just language, opens up the possibility for investigating how contemporary printed and digital texts, which are frequently rich in images, writing and sound, are used and understood within the situated contexts of broader social practices and structures.
