David Grant completes PhD on William Wallace

Postgraduate student David Grant has completed his doctorate on William Vincent Wallace’s opera Maritana. This was one of the most popular and successful operas composed in the middle of the nineteenth century and one of the few works by a British composer to see a production in Vienna. David’s PhD uses early sources of the work to present a critical edition of the complete score, accompanied by a detailed commentary, a review of the early performing history and reception of  Maritana in England, Europe, and the United States, and a biographical essay that sets the opera in the context of Wallace’s (1812-1865) remarkable life and career in Britain, Australia, Latin America, Europe, and the USA.
