As Musician in Residence for St Mary and St Nicholas Church Littlemore, OU Honorary Associate Malcolm Atkins has written a ‘Littlemore Mass’ for a concert on 25 June. The mass is based on melodies gathered from different communities in Oxford – especially asylum seekers.
The performance will bring different communities together and the mass has therefore been written for a range of abilities and traditions. Some of the music is suitable for singers who are not confident with using scores and will be easy to memorise. Some uses cross-rhythms and syncopations from styles in Zimbabwe and Nigeria (amongst other places). Some is in simple traditional chorale style.
