OU Music Associate Lecturer to be published in landmark Mahler study

Mark Summerfield, who completed his PhD with the OU Music Department in 2008 and was an Associate Lecturer and Summer School Tutor on module A214: Understanding Music, is the author of Chapter 3 of the forthcoming study Rethinking Mahler edited by Jeremy Barham. The book will be published by Oxford University Press later this month (September 2017).

Mark’s chapter, ‘The Earliness of Mahler’s Late Romanticism: The poetics of the “Deceptive Perfect Cadence” in the Ninth Symphony and Das Lied von der Erde’, builds on his PhD work, an analytical study that explored the idea of ‘closure’ in Mahler’s late music. Since gaining his doctorate, Mark has continued to be active in the field of Mahler research despite his full-time employment in the IT Services department of the University of Birmingham. This important study will hopefully be the first of many appearances of his academic work in the coming years.

Full details of the book can be found on the OUP website.
