In 2008, James was appointed Group Human Resources Director of Hays Plc, a global specialist recruitment business headquartered in London. James has a variety of board-level HR experience including appointments with Linde AG, a DAX 30 company, The BOC Group plc, a FTSE 50 company before being taken over by Linde, and with African Oxygen Ltd, where he was a Non-Executive Director.

James has lived and worked in the Former Soviet Union, Hong Kong and New Zealand and has a wide experience of Higher Education, having studied at the Open University doing three out of four years part-time of a psychology degree (cut short due to work commitments). Additionally he has an MA, from Cambridge University, a MLitt from Otago University, and an MSc from Thames Valley University, as well as studying at Michigan and Harvard Business Schools.

He has professional experience as a purchaser of Executive education from several business schools and in 2008, was appointed to the Board of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
