British Council, Ethiopia

The Government of Ethiopia began the Ethiopian Management Development Programme in 1996. Using Open University course material and teaching and learning methodologies, the Certificate and Diploma in Management were presented for local award. By the end of the programme in 2002 over 2,000 students had successfully graduated.

The internationally recognised Master of Business Administration (MBA), presented in English, commenced in Ethiopia in 1992. The programme aimed to equip a group of key governmental officials with essential governmental and management skills to assist in the transition towards democracy and a free economy in Ethiopia.

Since this initial group, a further six cohorts of students have registered on the programme, with student participation widening from the fourth cohort to include non-government students. The programme allows OU tutors to be flown from the UK to Addis Ababa to conduct tutorials and hold Residential Schools.

To date there have been over 270 MBA graduates, including the Prime Minister.
