Are sustainable travel policies within business to be taken seriously?

Helen Roby, Research Associate in Social Marketing at The Open University Business School is to give a presentation on the role of sustainable personal travel policies and practices as a corporate responsibility and human resources issues.

Sustainable travel policies can be much more than structural enhancements to the site. In order for them to succeed they need to support and deliver behaviour change and engage the community. These changes in behaviour can impact how a site is used by changing how people travel to work, or by developing working practices that encourage people to work more flexibly, from home or meet through virtual means. These can then have far reaching impacts on how people are managed and communicate.

Dr Roby will discuss examples drawn from a series of case studies to demonstrate the business case for such policies, where both carbon emissions and costs are cut, whilst developing opportunities to improve productivity and contribute to corporate responsibility strategies. The examples will then be used to demonstrate the innovative techniques being used to change behaviours and support the use of technology to communicate virtually, reducing the demand for corporeal travel.

The seminar will be taking place at The Open University Business School, Milton Keynes campus, Michael Young Building on Tuesday 1 November at 14.00-15.30.
