Evan Davis digs deep in new OU series

Britain's infrastructure – the roads, railways, water and power networks that we all rely on everyday – is creaking.

In Built in Britain, the new OU/BBC co-production, which starts on BBC2 at 8pm this Sunday, 7 October, Evan Davis sets out to find the scale of the engineering challenge Britain faces, and how we can tackle it.

The series was commissioned for the Faculty of Business and Law, and Maths, Computing and Technology. Dr Leslie Budd and Dr Matthew Hinton from the Business School were the academic consultants on the series.

In Episode 1, Evan visits some of the epic engineering networks which make Britain tick, and the projects transforming the nation, like a vast tunnel boring machine carving a new railway deep under London. It also looks at what more needs to be built to get Britain ready for the future.

In Episode 2 (on Sunday 14 October), he reflects on some of Britain’s less successful infrastructure projects of the not-too-distant past, and looks at how we’ve learnt from mistakes to become a nation which is once again rediscovering its skill for epic engineering.
