Biography
Caroline worked for 18 years in the sales and marketing side of the textile and knitwear industries before changing career into university teaching and research. Prior to starting at the Open University in 2006, Caroline taught strategy, organizational change and behaviour at Coventry and Northampton Universities. In recent years, her teaching has centred on work based or action learning and she has written about the role of practice in management learning. At The Open University, Caroline has chaired the production teams for BU130, Developing Effective Performance at Work and B204, Making it Happen! Leadership, Influence and Change and was a member of the production team for the MBA introductory module Management: perspectives and practice. Caroline’s research tends to be conducted within the day to day processes of managing and follows Karl Marx’s dictum that ‘the point’ is not only to know about the world but also to change it!
Research interests
Caroline bases her research on relational constructionist premises, being particularly interested in a practice based approach to management learning and talk in organizational life. Recent projects have included a major 30 month project working in the auto industry to speed up the new product development process and an 18 month action research project working with youth workers, engineering managers and charity executives to explore innovations in continuous management and professional development. Her current research is investigating the role of relational processes (mostly talk) in judgement and leadership.
